Anorexia is a very serious disorder. Anorexia is an eating disorder where a person eats very little or starves themselves in order to become thinner. Unlike other diseases where the main cause is identified, anorexia causes could be perplexing. To arrest this eating disorder, one should have an understanding of the anorexia symptoms.
People with anorexia often believe they are overweight, even when they are severely underweight. Many believe our media contributes to this problem, because it places such emphasis on being thin and equates thinness with beauty.
Psychological Causes Of Anorexia: More difficult to treat are the psychological causes stress, depression and anxiety. In fact, anorexia nervosa is a severe anxiety over body weight. We actually see ourselves as being fat, even as we look in a mirror and see a body that's wasting away from hunger, with bones sticking out.
For the person with anorexia they can never be too thin despite being dangerously below their natural weight. Sadly neither do they see the physical and emotional damage that they impose upon them self. Anorexia is a serious and potentially deadly eating disorder. With support from the right source it is curable. Unfortunately it is not a condition remedied overnight.
Causes of Anorexia nervosa
The exact cause of anorexia nervosa is not known. Traumatic events like rape as well as stressful things like starting a new job, can lead to the onset of anorexia. Genes, hormones, and chemicals in the brain may be factors in developing anorexia. Eating disorders also tend to run in families, with female relatives most often affected. A girl has a 10 to 20 times higher risk of developing anorexia nervosa, for instance, if she has a sibling with the disease.
Media-television, magazines, and mass media all emphasize being thin. Many people want to be skinny like models and celebrities so they become anorexic. People mimic what they see on television and in magazines and mass media.
Several factors:
• Cultural Pressure
• Psychological Issues
• Biological Causes
• Family Pressures
• Life Transitions
Anorexia causes are very varied and each person affected has very personal reasons. That's why there is no one way to protect women, or even men, from becoming anorexic. The best thing to do is to be supportive and everyone, no matter their weight. When someone exercises too much or diets too much they should not be commended on this behavior but rather talked to about why they feel they must be a certain size.
Intentional Causes Of Anorexia: This is probably the saddest part of the anorexia story. Some people actually cause themselves to become anorexic, accidentally, through fad diets or worse, intentionally, through a sick idea that the "anorexic look" is sexy. There are websites and companies making money by promoting self-starvation as a weight management tool.
Treatment of Anorexia nervosa
Treatment will vary depending on the individual circumstances. In some cases, medication is necessary, especially where there is depression or serious compulsive symptoms. Some form of psychotherapy is needed to deal with underlying emotional issues. Cognitive-behavioral therapy is sometimes used to change abnormal thoughts and behaviors.
