Bipolar Disorders And Its Causes

By altruist at 2010-01-07 03:20:09
The Bipolar Disorder cause is said to be the inequity of neurotransmitters in an individual’s brain. Scientists are still in the dark as with the reason for such disproportion of chemicals in the human brain. Although stress and other environmental factors do cause dramatic mood swings, this is not one of the Bipolar Disorder causes. Instead, Bipolar Disorder is a hereditary disease which is passed on from one generation to the other. Heredity, therefore, is also one probable bipolar disorder cause.

The signs of a bipolar disorder may persist for weeks or months, causing great disturbances in the lives of those affected as well as their friends and their families. Bipolar disorder can be controlled with medications and other therapies, but if left untreated, the condition worsens.

Along with a perfectly working brain, what we need is a control over our emotions. Being over excited or unduly angry all the time would not help us in any way. Quoting in the right terminology all our psychological factors must be balanced enough.

Bipolar disorders can be classified into four different types, Bipolar I and Bipolar II, Cyclothymic Disorder and Bipolar Disorder Not Otherwise Specified. Psychological health experts separate the condition into these four types because the symptoms of bipolar disorder show up differently in different people. Basic factors of bipolar disorder as follows:

1. Biochemical or biological

2. Genetic or familial

3. Medication induced

4. Environmental

Causes:

The cause of bipolar disorder is not entirely known. Genetic, neuro-chemical and environmental factors probably interact at many levels to play a role in the onset and progression of bipolar disorder. The current thinking is that this is a predominantly biological disorder that occurs in a specific part of the brain and is due to a malfunction of the neurotransmitters (chemical messengers in the brain).

Environmental factors in bipolar disorder may be a life event which may trigger a mood episode in a person with a genetic disposition for bipolar disorder. Even without clear genetic factors, altered health habits, alcohol or drug abuse or hormonal problems can trigger an episode. Among those at risk for the illness, bipolar disorder is appearing at increasingly early ages. This apparent increase in earlier occurrences may be due to under diagnosis of the disorder in the past.

Bipolar disorder has many potential causes: There does not appear to be one cause for bipolar disorder. Evidence suggests that many components may come into play, all of which affect the chemical balance of certain parts of the brain. Several studies on the occurrence of bipolar disorder in families demonstrate a genetic disposition toward the illness. Other factors may include extremely traumatic life events, chronic illness, alcoholism, and drug abuse.

These are just a few of the facts pertaining to bipolar disorder. It is not a simple illness, yet it is manageable and treatable. If you or someone you know has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, do not hesitate to seek information and help. Any one of the above-mentioned organizations can offer you education, guidance, and support. Obtaining knowledge is one of your first steps in alleviating the uncertainty and anxiety of dealing with such a diagnosis.
