You've probably heard it a hundred times, joint pain is merely the cause of aging and nothing else. This is a myth. In fact, joint disorders are caused by different factors all leading to pain and related stress. Athletes who also perform repetitive motion exercise that is weight bearing on a joint, such as rowing, will find that Osteoarthritis also will develop in the elbow and shoulder areas.

Weight is another risk factor for this disease. Since joint damage is partly dependent on the number of loads that the joint has to support, excess weight can increase your chances of developing this condition. This is particularly true in the case of hips and knees because they become, worn-out quickly in patients who are heavier.

Causes:

There are many factors which can cause joint pain. Some of the less complicated conditions associated with pain of the joints include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout. Osteoarthritis is the most common type and it occurs when the protective cartilage which covers the bones wears and tears away. This can then lead to the rubbing of the bones together. Because of the friction, pain and swelling is induced and it worsens when the cartilage is further damaged. Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic joint condition which is less common than osteoarthritis.

Inflammation. Swelling of joints or arthritis as it's more popularly known can be constant and recurrent. Inflammation causes pain and swelling due to tiny pieces of cartilage tearing off. A more common form of arthritis is called osteoarthritis. Often caused by the breakdown of cartilage, it targets the hips, hand, knees and spine. Although osteoarthritis is classified as a non-inflammatory arthritis (no swelling), swelling slowly appears as the arthritis develops.

Occupational hazards can also lead to this condition. People who work in assembly lines or do heavy construction work have a higher risk of developing this disease. A joint infection for example multiple episodes of gout can also cause this disorder. Some high level sports can also lead to a joint injury and this can lead to the condition.

Heredity. Heredity can cause joint disorder because your parents may have passed it on to you. The position of the bones and the uneven fitting of the joints can be abnormal leading to disorders. Though some may skip this genetic disease; those who get it won't experience this problem until they're older.

Osteoarthritis is generally equated with a disease of wear and tear and old age. Although it does usually accompany old age, researchers have found that the cartilage in a joint with osteoarthritis is chemically different than a joint without the disease.

Injuries also play a large part in the joint changes that lead to Osteoarthritis. People with knee injuries early in life were 16% more likely to develop arthritis in the affected knee than those without an injury. Other medical conditions have also been found to play a part in the cause of Osteoarthritis. Hemophiliacs have the potential to bleed into the joints causing damage to the cartilage.
