Bed Wetting Facts

By altruist at 2010-01-14 03:55:16
Believe it or not, bedwetting is one of the most common problems worldwide. Yet it is one that tends to be swept under the carpet – one that we don’t talk about or are ashamed to admit. But it need’nt or should’nt be like that! Bedwetting is more common than you may think in school age children. Whilst the majority of children will be dry at night by the age of five, a certain percentage (about 15-20%) continues to wet the bed after the age of five. The good news is that most children will eventually "grow out" of bedwetting. About 15% of children become dry spontaneously each year after the age of five. However, a small percentage of children will continue to wet the bed into their teens and even adulthood!

The reasons for bedwetting are generally unknown, though some children wet the bed when under stress or are unhappy about something. In most cases, however, there is no apparent reason, and it is very common in children up to six years old. The cause is normally irrelevant to the cure, unless it can be identified to one specific occurrence in the child’s life. Otherwise, before you look at drugs, you should try a bedwetting alarm.

If a child continues to wet the bed, or starts back wetting the bed past the age of four or five, it can be a good idea to have them examined by their pediatrician, just to rule out any physical problems that could be related to the bedwetting. Usually though, the bedwetting is not a sign of any serious physical problem, and it will usually stop as children mature and become more familiar with the feeling of a full bladder and develop greater self control.

Bedwetting is classified as either primary or secondary enuresis. While primary enuresis describes conditions in which bedwetting starts and continues from infancy, secondary enuresis refers to cases in which bedwetting resumes after a child has already learned to control his bladder through the night.

Bed wetting can also be due to a maturational delay in the development of bladder musculature and its ability to withstand the pressure of a large urine volume.Bedwetting is also not related to one's dreams. Many people believe that if someone dreams of water, that person is more likely to wet the bed.

There are typically three types of bedwetting alarm.

(1) A wireless bedwetting alarm, as the name might suggest, is a device which has no wired connection between the alarm and the moisture sensor. In many cases, the alarm is placed across the room and away from the bed, requiring the user to get up to turn it off when the alarm, strapped to their underwear, signals.

(2) A wearable bedwetting alarm is similar to the wireless version; however, whilst the sensor is still attached to the sleeper's underwear, the alarm is wired and is usually worn underneath the shirt or attached to the sleeper's pillow.

Medicines can also be used to avoid bedwetting. Drugs are sometimes used to reduce urine production at night, and some medicines are purported to help increase bladder capacity. The usage of medicines in any way is generally not advisable since excessive usage may have side effects. It may also occur that the stoppage of medicine intake may cause the situation to revert.
