Schizophrenia And Its Symptoms

By altruist at 2010-03-26 05:54:55
Schizophrenia is a chronic, severe, and disabling brain disease. Approximately one percent of the population develops schizophrenia during their lifetime - more than two million Americans suffer from the illness in any given year. Although schizophrenia affects men and women with equal frequency, the disorder often appears earlier in men, usually in the late teens or early twenties; women are generally affected in the twenties to early thirties. People with schizophrenia often suffer terrifying symptoms such as hearing internal voices not heard by others, or believing that other people are reading their minds, controlling their thoughts, or plotting to harm them.

Schizophrenia is a type of psychotic disorder, which means that the person often has a difficult time distinguishing between what is real and what is imagined. A person with schizophrenia often experiences psychotic symptoms in the form of delusions or hallucinations. Delusions are beliefs that are not based in reality, whereas hallucinations consist of imagined perceptual experiences, such as hearing imaginary voices or seeing things that are not real.

Causes of Catatonic Schizophrenia

Common Causes and Risk factors of Catatonic Schizophrenia

Psychological problems.

Biological ( Early brain development)

Brain abnormality.

Environmental factors.

Schizophrenia can be caused by schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, Alzheimer's disease, stroke, drug abuse and other factors. It is not caused by childhood experiences, poor parenting or lack of willpower, nor are the symptoms identical for each person. The behavior of children with schizophrenia may change slowly over time. It affects approximately one percent of the world's population, making it the most common psychosis. Schizophrenia and other mental health disorders have fairly strict criteria for diagnosis.

Genetic factors appear to play a role, as people who have family members with schizophrenia may be more likely to get the disease themselves. Some researchers believe that events in a person's environment may trigger schizophrenia. For example, problems during intrauterine development (infection) and birth may increase the risk for developing schizophrenia later in life.

Symptoms:

The symptoms of schizophrenia vary with the type of schizophrenia that a person suffers from. The most common form is paranoid schizophrenia. The patient imagines himself a victim of all sorts of conspiracies. Everyone is out to get him. To bolster this view, hallucinations and delusions are quite common. He hears voices inside him. With this persecution complex it becomes extremely difficult to maintain interpersonal relationships with family and friends.

Strange emotional responses characterize the second type, which is called disorganized schizophrenia. Symptoms of schizophrenia for this type may include emotionless facial display, a monotone voice, or the inability to laugh, cry and show any emotion. Sufferers may exhibit signs of "psychomotor poverty," disrupted speech patterns, a lack of spontaneous movement or motivation, derailment, thought disturbances and reality distortion.

A lack of vitamins is not a cause for schizophrenia. Some patients suffering of schizophrenia took vitamins after the disease had manifested and they got better but this could have been only a good effect of the diet and vitamins and they would have recovered any way independent of the followed treatment.
