Nutritional Deficiencies Facts

It's relatively simple to ensure that we are consuming the right number of calories in our daily lives. Most foods have their calorific information printed on the packet, so you can simply add up the numbers to find how much you're consuming.

However, it is more difficult to know if you are getting the right nutrients in the right quantities. In fact, even if you are selecting the right foods, you might be preparing them in a way that still leaves you deficient in one or more essential nutrients.

Nutritional deficiencies occur when a person's nutrient intake consistently falls below the recommended requirement. In America alone many are suffering from nutritional deficiency even those who think they are eating healthy. In many cases, you don't know you have nutritional deficiency until a health concern arises and you decided to visit a doctor and you will undergo numerous health tests.

Vitamins and other supplements are very common "health band-aids" in today's hectic world. We are often too occupied with our busy daily activities to eat the way we should. Many take the easy way out and run through the drive-by window at the nearest fast food establishment! So we take vitamin supplements to help us get the nutrients our body needs, and is probably not receiving from our food. Even those eating a "balanced" diet, are not getting the vitamins they need due to soil depletion and processed foods.

Our bodies are subject to many nutritional deficiencies, and symptoms are actually better indicators of nutritional deficiency than signs. The following are list of some nutritional deficiencies:

The list does not end there: greasy red scaly skin on your face or on the sides of nose can often be attributed to a vitamin B2 deficiency. An acne like forehead rash is due to a vitamin B6 deficiency. Cataracts in the eyes may mean a chromium deficiency or excess free radicals. Bags or dark rings under eyes are not always because of lack of sleep, they can also be attributed to allergies or food intolerances. Often for those with blue eyes and premature grey hair, there might be a vitamin B12 deficiency. Thyroid swelling may indicate iodine deficiency.

The combination of the antioxidants Resveratrol, Quercetin, and IsoFlavones have been a boost to weight loss for many dieters. The Antioxidant Cocktail combination reportedly shrinks your fat cells, causing your hunger to diminish. It also sends the signal to your brain to stop eating because you've had enough to eat.

Chronic alcoholics suffer from impaired gastritis, impaired absorption of the stomach and intestine, and therefore eat empty calories with no nutritional value. They suffer from a low thiamin status, necessary for the body's energy intake.

Adolescents are victims of media marketing. Unrealistic expectations of ideal body proportions are template into their psyche. Normal weight girls think that they are fat. Well-developed boys think they are too thin or lacking in muscular development. Strange rituals and eating pattern then develop such as bulimia (throwing up food), diuretic use, anorexia, food faddisms, etc. This can result in lack of growth, impaired energy levels, moodiness, and irritability.
